Jul 19, Gardening Tips Tomato Update

Greetings ladies and gentlemen.
A few weeks ago I wrote to you about tomatoes and told you what I thought were the best tomatoes to grow,
i.e., Tigerella and Tommy Toe. However, on going back over my site I realized I hadn't given you all the information.

While most people with a vegetable garden grow tomatoes, a lot of people that don't have much time grow only tomatoes, and I have left the most crucial tomato off my list, the one I would recommend if you are going to grow only one type is "Amish Paste".

This tomato gives a yield of over 15kg per plant; it tastes really delicious fresh and is wonderful in cooking. And as the name implies, it makes great paste for those that are interested, in fact the best all round tomato of them all.

I have a bad habit of writing something and sending it off straight away, in future I will write something and sit on it for a couple of days, then when I am satisfied I will put it up on my website, hopefully I won't have to make amendments.

As always I am dedicated to giving you information on the freshest, best tasting and most disease resistant vegetables available.

This is just for you, Julie. Have fun and remember a garden can be very forgiving.

All the best,
Gordi

Jul 17, Tasty Melons for Wine Making

Hello, I'm so glad you're here. Do you like wine? Last week I mentioned that I am only going to grow two types of melons this year; that's because besides eating them, I would also like to make wine out of them. Four pounds of fruit will give you four litres or one gallon of wine, or at least I hope it will. I will write and tell you after the end of the growing season, hopefully with a smile on my face. :o)

One of the melons I want to make wine out of next year is French Charentais; its aroma is reminiscent of the very best French wines. It is well worth growing, not only because of its irresistible taste but also because of its unforgettable aroma. It gives orange fruit of 1.3kg or 2.75lbs each, with about 3 melons to the vine. Harvest in 121 days. It is also resistant to powdery mildew. Too much heat will destroy the aroma. Sow the seeds in partial shade if you have many days over 35 degrees celsius.

The Cream of Saskatchewan watermelon has champagne colored flesh and tastes just like a stimulating glass of champagne, without the alcohol. :o) It weighs at 5kg or 11 lbs and is ready for harvest in 121 days. It gives 2 to 3 fruit per plant. It is prone to cracking at harvest, so eat it quickly. It is also a poor keeper, which means you won't get it in the shops and only the lucky few that grow it will ever savour this magnificent tasting melon.

As always, sow all melon seeds 4 to a mound and weed out the weakest.

All the best,
Gordi

Jul 10, Tasy Melons

Welcome Ladies and Gentlemen.

Today I want to talk to you about some heirloom melons, one is the Israeli variety Ha-ogen and the other is the Turkish melon Kavun Kirkagac, also known as, the Leopard melon.

The Ha-ogen is an aromatic melon weighing in at 1.5kg or 3lbs, and the fruit are about the size of a baseball or a large grapefruit.

When it is ripe, it has green colored flesh that reminds you of a beautiful piece of Jade, it gives off a delightful aroma and it is a great pleasure to eat, most people find its rich green flesh an incredible treat to enjoy at breakfast time, it is great if you are on or about to go on a diet.

It is a prolific bush type plant that won't spread all over the garden like most melons or pumpkins, and it bears
about 7 fruit on each bush, you'll know when it is ripe because the skin starts turning yellow, and it is one of the breeds where the melon slips from the stem with very little effort when it is ripe.

Oh yes,you can harvest it in about 120 days.

The turkish leopard melon combines the essence of all the best melons, it is about the size of a football and weighs 3kg or 6lb.

It has high yields, about 4 or 5 fruit to the plant and it stores well, plant four seeds in a mound, just like you do with pumpkins and weed out the weakest.

It is ready to harvest in approximately 110 days.

When ripe it has blazes of yellow over a dark green backround. On the inside it has two colors, with the inside band of flesh being like a cantaloupe and the outside half, a semitransparent green like the Ha-ogen melon, both bands of flesh differ in
flavour and this melon would be the supreme one compared to almost all other melons. in other words it is yummy.

Unlike the Ha-ogen, this is a plant that will wander so give it plenty of room.

It is said to have been discovered in Istanbul and this plant really thrives in a hot climate, so if the weather man tells you you're going to have a hot summer, go for it.

Both plants need plenty of water when they are growing, however limit the water as the plants near maturity, this tends to increase the flavour.
I will write you about some other highly prized melons in my next article.

All the best,
Gordi
